Dr. Stephen Knox

About Me

I am a doctor of the AHF Healthcare Centers: Oakland and San Francisco. During the summer of 1981, I read in the newspaper about a new illness identified as AIDS that affected gay men and hemophiliacs. I entered medical school that fall. HIV has been the most pressing and interesting problem of my career. In 1985, AIDS was widespread in New York City where I chose to do my residency. I later moved to San Francisco where AIDS was just as rampant. I joined a practice specializing in HIV, the Davies Medical Center. I'm proud to have been a part of that organization for 28 years. During that time, AIDS went from being a death sentence to being manageable with treatment. Being a member of the Davies Medical team was incredibly satisfying. Working at AHF allows me to work even more extensively in the HIV field.

In elementary and high school, I was a professional actor. I had one line in the 1973 film “American Graffiti.” Years later, I decided to become a doctor and had the opportunity to dedicate two months to teaching HIV care and treatment in rural Vietnam. I’ve maintained a 20-year commitment to work twice a year in an orphanage in Tijuana for a week. Seeing the children grow up and leave to live productive lives has been a pleasure.
